The Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen wishes to inform you that an urgent letter has been dispatched to the German Federal Foreign Minister, Ms. Annalena Baerbock. Our correspondence highlights the distressing circumstances surrounding the prolonged detention of Maria Kalesnikava, a courageous advocate for democracy in Belarus and a 2022 Charlemagne Prize laureate, which has now lasted over three years.

Key Concerns: 

• Maria has had no communication with her family or lawyers for more than seven months.
• Alarming health risks following her surgery in November 2022.
• Potential solitary confinement exacerbating her condition.
• Several of her representing lawyers have been disbarred, severely limiting her legal recourse.

We demand an end to Maria's detention, access to a lawyer, and appropriate medical care.
