Charlemagne Prize Laureate 1969 The Commission of the European Communities
Biography
Born on 15th July, 1902 in Liège.
Studied Law at the University of Liège and was conferred a doctorate (LLD). From 1926 acted as a lawyer at the Court of Appeal in Brussels.
1940 military service, was a prisoner of war in Germany from 1940–1945.
In 1939 and from 1946–1958 he was a Member of the Belgian Parliament. He held various ministries (1949–1950 Minister for Reconstruction and Development; 1954–1958 Minister of Economy). From 1958 he was a memer of the Commission of the European Economic Community; from 1967 to 1970 he held the office of President of the Commission of the European Community.
Died on 19th May 1983.
