‘Under her presidency the committee of 434 delegates speaking seven languages from 10 countries with such different parliamentary traditions and mentalities became a working parliament; urging forward with full determination toward the approaching roles it was to take over, despite difficult external conditions. […] Among the heretofore 24 recipients of the Charlemagne Prize, with Simone Veil, following Jean Monnet, Robert Schuman and François Seydoux de Clausonne, it is the fourth time that we thank France for its commitment to Europe. It is also the first time that we honor a woman working with us towards this goal.’
