‘I think about a Europe free of self-serving nationalism; where nations are perceived as living centers of cultural wealth which deserve to be protected and cultivated for the benefit of all. I think of a Europe where the great achievements of science, economics and social welfare do not direct themselves at senseless consumerism, but stand in the service of every person in need as well as helping those countries that also strive towards the goal of social security. May Europe, which has suffered many bloody wars in its history, be an active factor of peace in the world. I think of a Europe whose unity is grounded in true freedom. The freedom of religion and social freedom are precious fruits that have ripened on the humus of Christianity. […] I think of a united Europe thanks to the dedication of young people. Young people understand each other so well, regardless of existing geographical divisions. […] The Europe that I envision is a political, but moreover a spiritual entity, in which Christian politicians from all countries act in the consciousness of human prosperity, which is implicated in the belief: dedicated men and women that bring such values to fruition by putting them at the service of all, for a people’s Europe over which God’s face shines. This is the dream that I carry in my heart and wish to share with you and the next generations on this occasion.’
