‘The European political parties now maintain constant relations, partly of course with a view to direct elections. The European trade unions recognize that, in isolation, they would be nothing more than the victims of events […] The new system of satellite telecommunications which will carry the voices and images of the world of tomorrow, will be European. […] But also from a structural point of view, with the direct elections to the European Parliament Europe is on the threshold of a change of great importance, provided for in the Treaties […] I believe in any case that these direct elections will turn a new page in the construction of Europe leading to much more active popular participation. This will be of great significance particularly for the younger generations which so far have not found in the Community sufficient stimulus for their commitment and creativity.’
