‘The world must see the importance of the continued existence of Europe—this is a compulsory precept. Therefore our belief must find its foundation in something that goes beyond the market and even beyond defensive ties. […] We should also redesign our European flag. […] I suggest that we keep the blue background and the golden stars; but the stars should be depicted where every European capital city is located without showing the contours of the map. Thus the stars become symbolic representation of the nations whose borders have disappeared. This flag would have a meaning. It would be a constellation with its own special character. New stars would be added when new members joined the alliance. And so with every step forward towards our goal we would see a new star light up on the blue firmament of Europe’s flag.’
