Out of respect for the founders of the International Charlemagne Prize of the City of Aachen and in recognition of the historic proclamation of 1949, the Aachen City Council and the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen declare:
Like the original founders of the Charlemagne Prize, we believe that the City of Aachen, by virtue of its age-long border situation, its history and its current position at the heart of Europe, has a special obligation to promote the integration of our continent, the overcoming of its borders, and friendship between the peoples of Europe.
Given the developments in Germany and Eastern Europe since 1989, a comprehensive form of union is no longer a utopia. In addition, Europe will have an increasing role to play in bridging the North-South divide; and the problem of conserving our vital natural resources through protection of the environment in Europe and on our overpopulated world will loom ever larger.
The City of Aachen and the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize therefore reaffirm their resolve to award, on Ascension Day in the historic Coronation Hall of the Aachen Town Hall, the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen to personalities and to organisations for outstanding efforts in promoting the aforementioned goals.
The laureates will be selected by the Board of Directors of the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen, an independent organisation.
Aachen, 14 November 1990.
Dr. Jürgen Linden, Lord Mayor of the City of Aachen
Consul Hugo Cadenbach, Spokesman of the Board of Directors of the Society for the Conferring of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen
